Is Outpatient Treatment Right For You?

April 11, 2016 - , , , - 0 Comments

Getting the right treatment program and resources is a big factor in successful, long-term sobriety. Many people fail to get the maximum benefit from a course of treatment because it does not fit their life situation and needs. Outpatient treatment has many advantages, but it is not the best choice for everyone.

Inpatient Advantages

Inpatient treatment provides a support system that involves the place of treatment, counselors, medical staff resources, and very likely other recovering addicts. Support is a tremendous asset when in the early days of recovery and when faced with difficult days of cravings and learning to make new choices. The facility itself is a barrier to outsiders, and it helps control the choices available while undergoing treatment. Intensive inpatient treatment is difficult to match on an outpatient basis.

Outpatient Treatment

When choosing or accepting outpatient treatment, a recovering addict gains a great deal of personal freedom. One can continue to work, attend school, and with family and friends. With this freedom comes additional risks and needs to learn to make new decisions when confronted with situations that caused problems in the past.

Which is Right for You

An in-depth assessment before assigning a treatment plan is a great way to find the right program. Given the costs of treatment and personal or family resources, health insurance, private and public scholarship programs may also be considerations. The best treatment program is one based on the unique situation of the addict and the addiction. This includes dual diagnosis where more than one condition may be involved that requires treatment. For those with outside responsibilities like family and children, outpatient treatment may be best for those purposes but not necessarily the best path to long-term sobriety. Choosing a program is a great opportunity to take advantage of expert help and assistance.
