Who Will Watch My Kids While I Am In Treatment?

If you go to rehab, you will be taken to a place where you will be surrounded by doctors and other medical professionals. However, you won’t be able to take your kids with you as the rehab environment is not suitable for children. Also, you need to be alone to focus on your own needs before going back to society. In the meantime, who watches your children?

Your Spouse Could Watch Your Child

Assuming that your spouse can provide a safe and stable home for your children, he or she will take up caregiving responsibilities. In some cases, your spouse may be able to take the children to work with them or work out a way to get tasks done from home. If your kids are old enough, they may spend most of their day at school and go to daycare as they would on any other day, which means their routine doesn’t have to be interrupted.

Other Family or Friends Could Help Out

Your parents, siblings, or a close friend may be able to take care of your children while you are away. If you do need another person to take care of your child, make sure that you create a trust that gives him or her power of guardianship. This ensures that your chosen guardian can take the child without any other family members or friends challenging for custody in court. Assuming that the court is already involved, they will generally work with you to ensure the child’s best interests are met.

The Court May Appoint a Guardian for Your Children

A court may appoint a guardian for your children if you are unable to care for them and others are not willing to do so. While preference will be given to family members or others who know the child, it is possible that your kids will be put into foster care until you are able to take care of them again. In such a scenario, you have all the incentive in the world to finish rehab and stay clean once you get out.

While it may be hard to let your kids go, you and they will be better for your efforts. You can give them a better life because you can find a job, find housing, and otherwise care for them in a consistent manner that is in their best interests.
